In 1999, five Hutchies’ women embarked in a white stretch limo to the inaugural Ladies Weekend at Alexandra Headland on the Sunny Coast.
Back then, the construction industry was quite different. Hutchies had 15 (7.5%) women, a number that has now grown to 230 (12.3%) strong and is represented across every part of our business today – both on and off site. Fast forward another 25 years, and the landscape will have transformed yet again.
This year, International Women’s Day (IWD) coincides with the 25th anniversary of Hutchies’ Ladies Weekend, which has kicked off today back where it all began – Alexandra Headland. IWD serves as a significant occasion to acknowledge the evolution of women’s rights and celebrate the achievements and progress toward equality.

The theme for IWD this year is ‘Inspire Inclusion’, recognising the unique perspectives and contributions of women from diverse backgrounds. It aligns with the UN Women’s IWD theme of ‘Invest in Women’, both of which have significant meaning to Hutchies.
Inclusivity at Hutchies means we have many more women in highly skilled roles on and off site. As one of the industry’s largest on site, trade based workforces, Hutchies encourages and supports an increasing number of women in their pursuit of rewarding project based roles. We have triple the industry average of women already in site based roles.
Our company culture is underpinned by inclusion and respect. Investing in our people, irrespective of their gender, is not a difficult decision because we genuinely believe that diversity makes Hutchies better. We achieve this through a genuine and organic approach, fostering opportunities for women to build careers with us. It all starts with our investment in grass roots initiatives such as school based programs, apprenticeships and cadetships, ongoing upskilling and training, and employment security.

Kate Lucarelli, Project Manager
We believe that fostering opportunities and breaking down barriers is essential for building a stronger, more inclusive construction industry. Hutchies is committed to creating pathways for everyone, regardless of gender, to be their best in this dynamic industry.
