Hutchies is seeking a motivated and experienced Senior ESD Engineer to join our hard working team based in our Toowong office on a full time permanent basis.
Hutchies’ dedicated in house ESD Team have built over 60 green buildings, valued at more than $3B, encompassing 80+ certified ratings across 850,000m2 of green space. We’ve delivered a range of practical and effective sustainable solutions for both government and the private sector.
The team is involved in projects throughout the entire process and work closely with all stakeholders to ensure a building is given the opportunity to incorporate positive environmentally sustainable design (ESD) principles. We strive to achieve realistic outcomes not only for the building owner in a performance sense but also taking into account whole of life cycle considerations that create healthy places for occupants.
This type of service offering requires extensive experience, skills, and qualifications across several key areas beyond traditional building services design these days. Hutchies’ experts come equipped with this knowledge backed up by training and accreditation across Green Star, NABERS, WELL, LEED, EarthCheck, EnviroDevelopment and Fitwel.
We facilitate robust analysis of ESD options and assist project teams to maximise the positive environmental potential of their designs through to delivery and operation.
#Responsibilities
As a Senior ESD Engineer you will be interested in focussing your career development on design and deliver of sustainable buildings.
This role offers an opportunity to contribute to the growth of our in house ESD, services, facades team.
This role includes scope for pursuing individual interests within the field of ESD including management of ESD rating delivery, tender risk / opportunity / cost review, upfront carbon / material optimisation, and building services / facade design.
This role is a unique opportunity to have a direct impact on the way ESD initiatives are designed and delivered on projects. ESD Engineers at Hutchies are intimately involved in the day to day operations of a project, including engagement with clients, consultants, and subcontractors.
As a Senior ESD Engineer your responsibilities will include:
- Maintaining skills in the application of ESD principles to all work, this includes report writing, calculations, research, knowledge, presentations, and decision making
- Review of tender documentation and project ESD requirements
- Prepare and track project ESD budgets
- Manage ESD project requirements with autonomy
- Green Star Certification Management
- Familiarity in establishing costs/fees to undertake the project ESD requirements
- Ability to review façade and building envelope designs in relation to Section J, Green Star & NABERS project requirements
- Review and at times preparation of design, BCA section J (JV3), Green Star and preferably NABERS reports
- Maintain and enhance our capacity and expertise in the application of building performance computational modelling
Green Star, LEED, WELL & NABERS Team Support
- Design and ESD input in Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) projects
- Tender risk / opportunity / cost review of ESD initiatives and ratings
- Develop alternative tender ESD strategies based on project budgets, feasibility, risk / opportunity assessment and available information
- Implement ESD strategies for projects from tender through to final certification (including periodic review and management of project design and construction) year
- Work as part of the project design and construction team to ensure continually evaluate ongoing risks and opportunity associated with the original ESD strategy
- Liaise with clients to provide ongoing advice and status updates on ESD strategies
- Manage and assist with Green Star, LEED & WELL submissions
#Requirements
To be successful in this role, you should have:

- Previous experience as an ESD engineer / consultant, architect, or building scientist with at least 3-5 years practice in design, documentation and preferably heat contractor experience
- Experience in the application of Green Star, LEED and WELL from early project design through design, documentation, construction, and delivery / certification
- A high level of knowledge and understanding of the sustainability industry, including trends, opportunities and relevant legislative frameworks
- An understanding of the workings of buildings from architectural, services and structural perspectives
- Experience in the commercial property sector
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to manage conflicting priorities, deliver high quality outcomes on time and budget whilst ensuring that client expectations are met
- Ability to interact with a wide range of clients, stakeholders, professional disciplines, subcontractors, and internal construction team
- Self motivated, proactive and flexible with the ability to work autonomously as well as part of collaborative team
- Strategic and lateral thinker with the ability to apply their knowledge to a wide range of building types and settings
- Strong analytical, organisational and project management skills
- Be able to provide direction within the collaborative team approach with respect to their field
- An interest in research and development, and education in the field of sustainability
- Proficiency in Microsoft software eg Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc
Accreditation and / or experience in the following fields are an advantage:
- Green Star Accredited Professional
- LEED Accredited Professional
- WELL Accredit Professional
- NABERS Accredited Assessor
- NCC Section J assessments
- Experience with LCA / upfront carbon assessments
- Experience with the use of TAS, IES or similar dynamic thermal and energy modelling software
