Hutchies is proud to be working with one of Queensland’s oldest schools – Brisbane Girls Grammar School (BGGS) on the construction of their new Junior School in Spring Hill. This building will add additional capacity for Years 5 and 6 directly adjacent to their inner city campus.
The building design by m3architecture responds to and incorporates the architectural language of the existing campus, providing a whole school in a building — a miniature or ‘little sister’ of the Senior School. This creates a visual link across Gregory Terrace, extending the established identity of BGGS to the new site and redefining the southern streetscape.
The project is an adaptive reuse of an existing QCWA building which involves a comprehensive transformation into a 5 storey cutting edge educational facility. Works start by demolishing existing structures, including internal components, façade, and roof. New structural elements will extend the balcony, connecting to the existing stairs and lift, along with new Stairs from Ground to Level 1.The façade will undergo significant upgrades, and a new roof and roof structure will be installed. Additionally, the team will repurpose the existing side and rear boundary balconies for landscaping. Inside, the state of the art facility will feature administration areas, a tuckshop, amenities, 8 General Learning Areas, a science / art Flexible Learning Area, a music ensemble practice space, and a library. An outdoor terrace with a landscaped playground will enhance the overall experience.
The Junior School experience will be distinctive, tailored specifically for Years 5 and 6 students, while also maintaining alignment with the renowned secondary school. Separate academic, co curricular, and pastoral care models will provide the right balance, preparing them for the transition to secondary schooling.
