High bay height

Hutchies has recently completed the expansion of NewCold’s Melbourne II storage facility. This is one of the largest automated high bay warehouses in the world. High bay warehouses are designed to take advantage of building height with tall racking units to maximise capacity. Melbourne II features two automated high bays, one automated dispatch low bay facility and a technical control building.

NewCold is one of the world’s leading advanced automated warehouse and cold chain logistics companies. Their Melbourne II facility provides an integrated one stop solution with ambient, chilled, and frozen capabilities, setting new service standards.

The high bays allow for different temperature storage requirements. They are fully automated with cranes and material handling equipment which are designed to move and store pallets. Each high bay stands 46m high. The Melbourne II expansion by Hutchies has increased the capacity to store an additional 125,000 pallets. This significant storage capacity extension is achieved through the efficient use of space and automation.

The construction of the facility involved substantial structural work showcasing the size of the increase, with the structural concrete works package incorporating 1,100 tonnes of reinforcement and 7,300 cubic meters of concrete. Along with structural steel works of 3,500 tonnes. To envelop the facility required 48,000 lineal metres of polyisocyanurate (PIR) panel and 105,000 specialty screws. The roof waterproofing membrane is 21,000 metres square.
