Now surrounded by similar commercial and residential projects, Centro on James comprises 25,000m² of buildings including four picture theatres, and furniture & household appliance showrooms. Centro on James has transformed 36,000m² of unsightly industrial land into a vibrant central village that now includes offices and manufacturing outlets as well as headquarters for several IT and computer companies. Centro was designed by Cottee Parker Architects and reflects some of the original 1930s Spanish Mission architecture amongst its many integrated forms of buildings.
The bustling James Street Precinct in Brisbane’s lower area of Fortitude Valley has grown to become one of the most renowned lifestyle, entertainment and shopping districts in Queensland.
The success is thanks to a range of carefully designed and crafted collocated precincts, which together offer a selection of high end restaurants, bars and luxury shopping brands along beautiful tree-lined streets.
Hutchies first became involved in this landmark revitalisation project through the development of Centro on James in 1998. Centro was undertaken by our long-term client Property Solutions and included the first retail and hospitality spaces as well as Brisbane’s first Palace Cinema complex.
Following on from the success of Centro, Hutchies worked alongside the Malouf Group to bring the adjacent James Street Market development to life.
James Street Market was completed in 2012 and both this and the Centro development went on to win a range of accolades from various design and construction bodies across Australia and has now been the benchmark for future Malouf Group developments including the Ferry Road Market in Southport and now the proposed Boggo Road Village development at Dutton Park.
